Valespace employs 65 staff and is an approved "back to work" company. In fact, a minimum of 35 of its staff are in the processing of returning to work after being unemployed. Almost every type of waste is handled at the site: paper, cardboard, plastic, wood, metal, etc., in fact, over 15 types of input. The site operates two sorting lines: one for domestic waste and the other for industrial waste. One of the key features of the company is that sorting is carried out manually. In order to meet the requirements of its industrial customers regarding the the risk of storing hazardous materials, Valespace opened a transit platform for special waste in February 2004. Paints, bases, solvents, batteries, plant-protection products, etc. are kept temporarily at a storage centre before being sent on to waste treatment or landfill units. As the commercial transactions are based on the weight of the waste, weighing equipment is vital at the sorting centre. Valespace used to have just a single vehicle scale for weighing trucks but as the business continued to expand, the weighing station very quickly became congested, with drivers often having a long wait. As a result, Valespace commissioned METTLER TOLEDO to install a second vehicle scale on site who suggested a vehicle scale with two OverDrive™ 24/7 weighing terminals and OverDrive™weight management software, to control the access barriers as the ideal solution. Once the new equipment was installed, the weighing station made the site more secure, protected the vehicle scales and, more importantly, kept the traffic flowing. As Pierre Vandekerckhove, the site manager, says: "The time drivers have to wait has reduced from ten minutes to less than three." Drivers are identified by swiping a badge in front of the weighing terminal. All the data (driver, customer, carrier, type of products, origin, weight, etc.) are recorded by the software and retrieved the next day for billing purposes. It also provides maximum traceability and data protection. Valespace has also invested in a 3-tonne weighing platform, which is accurate to the kilogram, for weighing special waste from its transit platform. Satisfied with the equipment from METTLER TOLEDO, Valespace has decided to assign the regular inspection of its weighing equipment to the company. A few figures… – 29,000 tonnes treated every year – 15 types of input – 100 trucks per day – 200 weight measurements per day
