Czech Gateway to the PET bottles

The PET recycling plant at Rostock, Germany, operated by Cleanaway
Deutschland, started commercial operations in early 2002 and in the first
year recycled 11,000 tonnes of PET – equivalent to 350 million post
consumer bottles. After initial difficulties the operation is now in the
black.
The Rostock plant is based on the URCC process developed in the USA - a
process which results in clean food contact grade PET for closed loop
bottle-to-bottle recycling. The URCC process is also used in the Frauenfeld plant in Switzerland.
Cleanaway holds the URCC patent for
almost all European countries, where about 450 million tonnes of post
consumer PET are collected annually in Europe.
Currently only a small
proportion goes for bottle-to-bottle recycling. Cleanaway director Rolf Haferkamp sees this as a massive opportunity for growth. He sees potential
for a new plant each year, and the company is already holding serious
talks in Sweden as well as having been awarded a tender in the UK.
The situation in Germany is clouded somewhat by the uncertain impact that the
deposit legislation will have on the PET container business but Cleanaway
confirm that the Rostock plant is there to stay.
