Double money for recycling empty drink containers

PEOPLE who recycle their empty drink containers will now be able to double their money.

Environment Minister Jay Weatherill this morning announced the rise in the container deposit scheme from 5c to 10c would come into effect tomorrow.

Drink containers still labelled with the five-cent deposit mark will also attract the increased refund.

"South Australians can be proud of the fact we have significantly less litter and higher recycling rates of drink containers than any other state," Mr Weatherill said.

"On Clean Up Australia Day, drink containers made up less than 10 per cent of SA's litter, compared with 40 per cent nationally.

"This is because of our nation-leading approach to recycling."

The deposit scheme started in 1977. Since then it has been added to the Heritage Icons List, the only piece of SA legislation on the list.

The 10c container deposit has been implemented in consultation with the beverage and container recycling industries.

Containers attracting the refunds include flavoured milks, fruit juices, soft drinks, vitamin drinks, sport drinks, iced teas. beer, alcoholic sodas, spirit-based mixers and some wine based beverages.
