Project to research mixed plastic recycling

A project to research the sustainability of mixed plastics recycling is to be started in Britain in September. The Waste & Resources Action Programme WRAP will be running the trial, and is currently looking for companies to take part.

WRAP says that previous research has established the technical, economic and environmental feasibility of recycling mixed plastics packaging. Now it wants to establish the commercial viability.

The structure identified by WRAP is to use integrated plants to produce recycled plastics combined with solid recovered fuel, with a target capacity of at least 40,000 tonnes by 2011.

The sustainability trials will be split into three parts, and companies can tender for one or all parts. The project will focus on: a materials recovery facility processing trial looking at effective mixed plastic sorting processes; a commercial scale recycling trial and management of what remains and cannot be recycled; and a detailed economic assessment of the commercial sustainability of mixed plastics recycling.

The closing date for tenders is August 25.
