The recommendation was made by the European Plastics Recyclers, which warned that the European plastics recycling market was under threat due to the economic downturn and the sudden drop in overseas export of plastic wastes.
The abrupt halt has created huge logistical challenges that might overstretch the capacity limits of certain collection systems, EuPR warned.
A spokesman added that due to the economic recession, investments in the expansion of collection and sorting centres might be delayed but he warned against this, if the EU is to meet the Waste Framework Directive objective of achieving 50% recycling by 2020. “It is important that these investments are done in order to continue on the same path as in the past in order to treat our waste in a sustainable way,” he said.
“Collection schemes must be flexible in economic downturns in order to support recycling,” he added. “Moreover, an harmonisation effort is needed in order to simplify and make the market transparent.
