Build more plastics recycling capacity - EuPR

The PETrecycling.cz assessment based on R&D up-to-day results is, that it should be made clear, that all beverage containers, e.g. PET bottles, ALU cans and glass bottles, that are commercially imported into Czech Republic or sold here should be included in return systems with deposits - to encourage the consumers to take the bottles back

The plastics recycling industry has been urged to build more reprocessing capacity in Europe rather than relying on exports following the collapse of Asian demand for recyclate.

The recommendation was made by the European Plastics Recyclers, which warned that the European plastics recycling market was under threat due to the economic downturn and the sudden drop in overseas export of plastic wastes.

The body, which represents plastic recyclers in Europe, said that in 2007, 85% of all EU plastics waste exports were to China, but this market has dried up in 2008.

The abrupt halt has created huge logistical challenges that might overstretch the capacity limits of certain collection systems, EuPR warned.

EuPR working groups have long stressed that local waste has to find a local solution and cited export as a threat to sustainability.

A spokesman added that due to the economic recession, investments in the expansion of collection and sorting centres might be delayed but he warned against this, if the EU is to meet the Waste Framework Directive objective of achieving 50% recycling by 2020.

“It is important that these investments are done in order to continue on the same path as in the past in order to treat our waste in a sustainable way,” he said.

In addition, he said it was up to industry, collection schemes and member states to find solutions.

“Collection schemes must be flexible in economic downturns in order to support recycling,” he added. “Moreover, an harmonisation effort is needed in order to simplify and make the market transparent.

Regarding packaging, brand owners have to take their responsibilities and continue promoting recycling.”

To PROMOTE efectively RECYCLING needs only two steps:

  1. Finish with legislative jabberwock "WASTE/Scrap". Term waste means in fact animal and/or human excrements (dejecta). etc. More than that, this name is very counterproductive. For example Recycable Post Consumer´s Components (in short e.g. RPCC) have to be used uegently as an legislatory determined act;

  2. To support REcycling (e.g. in closed loopand in EU) collection schemes needs modern high-tech and incentive methods. They exists two - up to now: mandatory refund deposit or/and incentive collection with perfekt subject´s identification - curbside using barcode, or RFID (namely as Allied Waste. Recyclebank, resp.). Contemporary collection methods from the eighties of past century are obsolete and uneconomical.
