Boston and Green Bay, Wis., are kicking
off single-stream curbside recycling programs.
Green Bay started collecting
single-stream material, June 29, while Boston will begin making the
switch, July 1.
While Green Bay´s biweekly program is voluntary -
residents can choose to use their existing bins or buy a 65-gallon cart
from the city for $38 - Boston will deliver more than 55,000 64-gallon
carts to single-family homes and 6-unit-or-less apartments over the next
year.
Boston expects a surge in recycling using
the single-stream system that will save the city
$1 million per year in
waste disposal costs. It costs $40 less per ton
for the city to recycle
than to send it to a landfill or incinerator, according to city officials.
