EC to investigate PET dumping

The European Commission is to investigate a complaint of dumping of PET in Europe by producers in Iran, Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates.

The complaint was lodged in July by the Polyethylene Terephthalate Committee of Plastics Europe on behalf of producers representing more than half of the total Community production of polyethylene terephthalate.

It alleges that one producer in Iran, several producers in Pakistan and one producer in the United Arab Emirates have all received aid from their various governments which amounts to subsidies; that imports of PET from these countries have increased overall and in terms of market share; and that the volumes and prices of the imported PET have had a negative effect on the market share and price level of European producers.

The Commission is now collecting evidence of prices and volumes from importers and European producers and is scheduled to complete its investigation by October 2010.
