Managing director Joe Iannidinardo said all new Apet (Amorphous Polyethylene Terephthalate) trays made at is facilities in Denmark and the Czech Republic will contain up to 50% recycled PET (rPet), while cPET (Crystalline Polyethylene Terephthalate) trays will use up to 25%.
Iannidinardo pointed to the change in attitudes to recycled materials, but said the quality and quantity of material available had hindered take-up. "The material needs to be suitable for food contact and should work in the same way as the virgin material," he said. Harrison said he was keen to look at projects to recycle trays. "In the UK, we sell premium cPET trays and wouldn't be averse to reusing the material for extrusion, but the quantities available are extremely small," said Iannidinardo. He added that the firm had performed extensive testing of products during 2008 and that it hoped to switch to the new material blends by the end of the year. Harrison Europac was set up in 1989 and is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Danish firm Færch Plast. It produces plastic packaging for the ready-meal, fresh meat, and ambient food sectors.
