Ireland: Litter pollution levels have improved significantly

The PETrecycling.cz assessment based on R&D up-to-day results is, that it should be made clear, that all beverage containers, e.g. PET bottles, ALU cans and glass bottles, that are commercially imported into Czech Republic or sold here should be included in return systems with deposits - to encourage the consumers to take the bottles back

Michael Kitt, the Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, has welcomed the final results of the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) 2008 Litter League. He noted that litter pollution levels have improved significantly since surveying first commenced in 2002, when 9 of 29 towns surveyed were deemed to be “seriously littered” and a further 9 were classified as “litter black spots”

The final survey for 2008 revealed that only 3 of 55 towns surveyed were deemed “seriously littered” while there are now no towns classified as “black spots”. “We must avoid complacency,” he said, “but it is encouraging to see the steady improvement in litter levels in towns and cities across the country, as reported by IBAL. This improvement has also been reflected in the results of my own Department’s National Litter Pollution Monitoring System.”

The Minister congratulated those towns that improved their position in 2008 and also those who retained their “clean to European norms” status. The Minister encouraged all parties involved in the battle against litter to maintain their focus, “Only through a sustained effort by all concerned - the public, businesses, local authorities and my Department - can we win this fight.”

The Minister noted IBAL's report that two-thirds of towns surveyed are now ‘clean to European norms.’ He said that, “despite the current economic slowdown, the Government and I, as Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, remain deeply committed to tackling litter pollution in this country. I think that the 2008 litter league results prove that, working together, we can make a difference.”
