NY: A deposit on the future

The PETrecycling.cz assessment based on R&D up-to-day results is, that it should be made clear, that all beverage containers, e.g. PET bottles, ALU cans and glass bottles, that are commercially imported into Czech Republic or sold here should be included in return systems with deposits - to encourage the consumers to take the bottles back

Word out of Albany Friday was that the perfectly sensible plan to expand the state bottle bill to include nickel deposits on water and sports drink bottles was once again running into trouble in the state Senate.

The bill has been defeated in the Senate in past years, but this year was expected to be different, with Democratic Majority Leader Malcolm Smith coming out in favor of the measure.

The measure would update the bottle bill to reflect current reality; when the bill was initially passed, the concept of buying bottled water was in its infancy. The new bill would directly help the environment while directing more than $100 million in new revenue from unclaimed deposits to the Environmental Protection Fund.

Senators should think twice about standing in the way of the common-sense expansion of one of the state's most successful environmental programs.
