Oregon Bottle Bill

The PETrecycling.cz assessment based on R&D up-to-day results is, that it should be made clear, that all beverage containers, e.g. PET bottles, ALU cans and glass bottles, that are commercially imported into Czech Republic or sold here should be included in return systems with deposits - to encourage the consumers to take the bottles back

Under the Oregon Bottle Bill, people pay a 5-cent container deposit when they buy beer and soft drinks and can return the containers to stores and get paid the 5-cent refund value for each container returned.

The law has been successful and popular, with high recycling rates and reduced litter but higher costs for grocers who have to redeem the containers. Until 2007, the law had changed little since it was passed in 1971. Ten other states and several Canadian provinces have passed similar laws, and some cover juices and other beverages not covered under Oregon's law.

The 2007 Legislature expanded the Oregon Bottle Bill by adding a 5-cent refund value to water and flavored water beverage containers, effective January 1, 2009. The 2007 legislation also created a task force to study and make recommendations on bottle bill matters such as whether the state should add other beverage containers, raise the refund value, or establish new redemption centers. DEQ is proposing a 2009 legislative concept, based on the task force’s recommendations.

The Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) administers and enforces the bottle bill. DEQ compiles information on recycling of containers under the bottle bill and the effectiveness of bottle bill options implemented in other states and provinces.
