Scotland injects £5m into plastics recycling

The PETrecycling.cz assessment based on R&D up-to-day results is, that it should be made clear, that all beverage containers, e.g. PET bottles, ALU cans and glass bottles, that are commercially imported into Czech Republic or sold here should be included in return systems with deposits - to encourage the consumers to take the bottles back

The Scottish government is looking to boost plastics recycling by investing £5m in the development of new facilities via its mixed plastics capital grant programme.

The cash support, which is being administered by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (Wrap), can be used to fund up to 30% of a capital investment in setting up a recycling plant in Scotland.

Wrap's director for Scotland Iain Gulland said the country only collected 7.5% of the 200,000 tonnes of plastic waste generated each year, most of which is shipped to Asia.

"This funding package will help develop plastics processing and recycling facilities. It could also contribute to economic recovery by presenting new business opportunities," he said.

Tender documents demand that the plant should segregate and sort plastics packaging, preferably into polymer type, using
proven technology. It is also required that the plant is up and running by 31 January 2012 and that the company needs to show clearly defined end markets.

Scottish environment secretary Richard Lochhead said a Scottish-based facility would encourage households to recycle and could create new jobs and business.

"Creating opportunities close to home makes sense both for the environment and the economy," he said.

The closing date for submissions is 26 June. For more information or to apply, click here to visit the Wrap website.

• Wrap is expanding its business development service to provide local expertise for small and medium-sized recycling businesses from regional advisors.
