The new inventory logistics system does away with the traditional system of service technicians picking up parts from various regional warehouse hubs and then taking the parts out into the field for installation. Instead, Tomra North America now utilizes one large specially outfitted truck as a mobile warehouse that services all of the approximate 50 technicians working in the states of New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Maine. This system has made it possible to eliminate six warehouse facilities totaling 30,000 square feet. This will save about 203 tons of CO2 emissions annually, and the added emissions from the mobile ware-house truck will be completely offset by the elimination of approximately 130,000 van miles per year. According to Rich DeRosa, Senior Vice President Operations at Tomra North America, “this was developed as a result of TOMRA’s ongoing focus on coming up with innovative and more environmentally friendly ways of doing things. Now we are running all our inventory logistics from one central service hub based in Shelton, Connecticut. The whole operation is managed through our Clearview Inventory Logistics software provided by Nexterna, which has helped us reduce our total parts replenishment time by about 100 man hours a week. When a field technician orders a part it is electronically transmitted via Clearview and a pull list is generated at the service hub for the parts to be placed on the mobile warehouse truck. The truck then delivers the parts out to the technicians in the field according to an optimized schedule, and at the same time brings back used parts from the field. These parts are either refurbished and used again or decommissioned and recycled.” The TOMRA Mobile WarehouseThe Mobile Warehouse is outfitted with an internal crane system that runs the length of the truck, for lifting and transporting heavy parts such as compactor units. Deliveries are made directly to technicians out in the field on an as-needed basis.
