Closed Loop calls for bottle recycling rethink

The PETrecycling.cz assessment based on R&D up-to-day results is, that it should be made clear, that all beverage containers, e.g. PET bottles, ALU cans and glass bottles, that are commercially imported into Czech Republic or sold here should be included in return systems with deposits - to encourage the consumers to take the bottles back

The UK waste industry’s practice of shipping plastic bottles overseas for recycling is a threat to the future
of the UK’s infant recycling industry and Britain’s wider green economy, according to Closed Loop Recycling, a UK producer of food grade rPET and rHDPE.

Chris Dow, managing director of Closed Loop, has issued a call to the new coalition government ministers responsible for carbon reduction, waste and recycling, urging them to review the practice, including a review of schemes such as the PRN system, which he says currently support the shipments by local authorities and waste companies.

His letters state that whilst low carbon job creation and building Britain’s green economy are high priorities for the new coalition, the UK is putting this at risk by supporting overseas waste shipments – and therefore overseas recycling jobs – instead of investing in the UK’s fledgling recycling industry and this country’s home grown manufacturing talent.

Dow said: "Shipping what is a valuable resource for our industry to other countries is a third world practice. Not only is this an environmental risk, it is completely nonsensical in economic terms as it means that a growing UK industry is not being supported and instead green - or not so green - jobs are being created overseas instead of here in the UK."

"We’ve established the infrastructure and the know-how in Britain to be able to deal with our own waste, consumers are recycling more, and increasing numbers of packaging companies, retailers and big name brands are choosing to use UK-sourced recyclate in their packaging. What we need now is a review of schemes such as the PRN system, to allow the industry to develop further to the benefit of the whole economy."

Dow: "Shipping a valuable resource overseas is nonsensical."

Every year, UK consumers throw away thousands of tonnes of waste plastic bottles – but only 39% are collected for recycling. Of these, a vast amount is then shipped overseas which Chris Dow believes sends out the wrong message to consumers and investors alike. The UK plastic recycling industry has the potential to create thousands of low carbon jobs, given
the right investment and incentives.
