WRAP invites tenders to easier recycling of plastic milk bottles

The PETrecycling.cz assessment based on R&D up-to-day results is, that it should be made clear, that all beverage containers, e.g. PET bottles, ALU cans and glass bottles, that are commercially imported into Czech Republic or sold here should be included in return systems with deposits - to encourage the consumers to take the bottles back

Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) wishes to commission a research and development project to develop label, ink and adhesive systems for use on plastic milk bottles that do not contaminate the plastic during the recycling process. Currently the label/ink/adhesive systems used release inks from the label into the polymer during the recycling process. This taints the polymer and limits the percentage of recycled plastic that can be used in the manufacture of new milk bottles with a recycled content through closed loop recycling systems.

The project aims to increase the recyclability of HDPE milk bottles coming on to the UK market which in turn will enable the recycled content in plastic milk bottles to be increased. WRAP’s target is for 50 percent of the milk industry’s capacity to commit to implementing the new system by 2011.

The work will include:

  • Assessing the challenges in bottle, ink, adhesive and label design and identifying potential solutions
  • Developing a viable system that does not taint the recycled polymer during the recycling process
  • Evaluating the system’s economic and environmental viability
  • Large-scale trials of a developed solution

Paul Davidson, Plastics Sector Manager, comments: “A successful system will not only improve the quality of the recycled polymer, but it will enable new milk bottles to be manufactured with a higher recycled content in closed loop recycling systems. Increasing the use of recycled content will deliver CO2 savings through greater substitution of virgin polymer in the manufacture of new bottles, as well as conserve valuable resources and divert waste from landfill.”

A full Tender Invitation Document and application form can be obtained from the WRAP website under www.wrap.org.uk. The closing date for tender submissions is Friday September 12th.
