A study commissioned by the Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL), Climate Action Network Europe (CAN) and the WWF claimed that better health would be a 'co-benefit' of cutting emissions. Currently, the EU is committed to cutting emissions by 20 per cent by 2020. However, the report says that raising this to 30 per cent would cut hospital admissions by 30 per cent and cut the amount of lost work days by two million. It estimates 105,000 reduction in life years lost and 5,300 fewer cases of chronic bronchitis. Delia Villagrasa, senior advisor to WWF, said: "Until now the discussion on climate change has been all about costs to industry and the economy, while costs of climate pollution to the society have largely been neglected." A recent report suggested that to meet the target of cutting carbon emissions by 50 per cent by 2050, half of electricity should be generated from renewable sources.
