On November 6-7, 2007 the Resource Recovery Forum is collaborating with WRAP, the Resource Efficiency KTN, the Food Processing Faraday and consultants Brook Lyndhurst to organise a major conference on waste and resource efficiency within the entire food sector - from production and processing through distribution, retail, consumption and resource recovery.

Around a third of all the food we buy ends up being thrown away and most of this could have been eaten - its not just peelings, cores and bones. 90% of us just don't realise how much good food we throw out. In the UK we throw away 6.7 million tonnes of food each year. That?s 1 tonne for every 9 people. We cook or prepare too much food. We let it go past its "use by" date or we forget it and it goes off.

The good food getting thrown away costs us at least GBP8bn every year in the UK. Producing, transporting and storing food uses a lot of energy water and packaging, which is wasted if the food gets thrown away uneaten. If we stopped wasting all this food, we could prevent the equivalent of 15 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions each year - the same as taking 1 in 5 cars off the road.

Most of the food thrown away ends up in landfill sites. This causes methane gas to be released into the atmosphere. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas and a significant contributor to climate change. This event looks upstream at the challenges and solutions to becoming more resource efficient and sustainable, and downstream to explore the views, attitudes and behaviour of consumers. Senior speakers from industry, regulators, local authorities and NGOs will discuss future directions and options for change.

We have a great set of expert speakers in this two-day conference, and thanks to the sponsorship from WRAP, the Resource Efficiency KTN, the Food Processing Faraday you can attend both days from only £95.

I do not attach a copy of the programme, as it can be annoying to receive unsolicited attachments. Please let me know if you would like a copy and I will email it directly, or you can download it from our website (see below).

To download a copy of the brochure and programme, or to register for the conference, simply go to our home page at:

Please let me know if we can help further.
