"By repositioning the award we are placing it in a more open and broader setting for municipal organisations," explained Markus Tavernier, general manager of the IGORA Cooperative at the awards ceremony in Buchs (Canton St Gallen), a previous winner of the Prix. "On the jury we considered how the three winning localities have gone about improving the quality and attractiveness of recycling." Bold and innovative approaches are what is wanted, a criterion fulfilled by all three winners. In Fehraltorf the newly introduced waste collection service for over 80-year-olds was the key to victory. A win-win market and exemplary anti-litter campaigns impressed the judges in Herisau. The amalgamation of separate collections and the resulting cost savings secured Entlebuch a place on the podium. IGORA is responsible for a fully functioning collection and recycling system for empty aluminium containers. It seeks to work very closely with local authorities. Today, 91 percent of aluminium cans, 80 percent of pet-food trays and some 60 percent of aluminium tubes are sent for recycling. Zurich, 19 March 2010
