New waste sorting obligation in Brussels Region

The PETrecycling.cz assessment based on R&D up-to-day results is, that it should be made clear, that all beverage containers, e.g. PET bottles, ALU cans and glass bottles, that are commercially imported into Czech Republic or sold here should be included in return systems with deposits - to encourage the consumers to take the bottles back

As from 1 January 2010, the obligation to sort glass in the Brussels Region will be extended to all other household waste.

Blue PMD bags (plastics, cans and tetrapacs)

As from 1 January 2010, the obligation to sort glass in the Brussels Region – in force since 1 January 2009 – will be extended to all other household waste.

This obligation concerns in particular the PMD (PMD packaging includes Plastic bottles and flasks, Metal packaging and Drinks cartons) and paper-cardboard segments, which will be the subject of a communication campaign by Bruxelles Propreté and Fost Plus at the end of November.

A comprehensive 12-page sorting guide will be published in the free regional press (Vlan, Brussel Deze Week and 7Dimanche) with an important section on sorting.

Face-to-face distribution of blue bags and yellow bags together with sorting memos will be organized in problem areas. A follow-up campaign will also take place in February 2010.

Bruxelles-Propreté and Fost Plus have also developed a sorting kit composed of two bags: a two-compartment bag for PMD packaging and paper-cardboard, and a special bag for glass bottles, flasks and jars.

This sorting kit is meant to make it easier to take waste to the sorting premises in your block of flats or to bottle banks.

The kit with its explanatory memo was tested with 250 households from two social housing blocks. Following these tests, the bags were improved and 8,000 other households living in social housing accommodation will be provided with these kits in the near future.
