HOME ARCHIV 2003 27.08.2003 New shrink sleeve material

*******************         From article How to handle deposit system on this server: "The collection systems for beverage containers being operated by the distribution trade (e.g. in Germany and EU) are resulting in a much lower quality of post consumer PET. Glass, PET, aluminium and steel are frequently all collected together, thus calling for more intensive sorting prior to recycling"

A new shrink sleeve material, Topas cycloolefin coplymer (COC), has been introduced by Ticona for use on PET bottles.

The material closely follows the contours of the bottle without creasing. It has good printability and readily separates from the PET in recycling systems.

Films made from Topas COC form a tight fit because their recoverable shrinkage can be as high as 90 percent. Film manufacturers can select the appropriate Topas COC grade to suit the process in which it is used. For instance a formulation with a low shrink stress keeps thin-wall PET bottles from deforming as the sleeve shrinks, or high temperature Topas COC blends avoid additional sleeve shrinkage during processes such as steam sterilisation. The sleeve labels are made from single layer or multi-layer extruded film stretched in only one direction to as thin as 40 to 50 microns. The film is then printed, cut and formed into tubes.

Ticona, based in Summit, New Jersey and Kelsterbach Germany, is part of Celanese AG.
