Petrecycle has installed a
pilot plant at Brooklyn, about 20km away from the Melbourne CBD. The
objective of the pilot plant is to enable a comprehensive demonstration
and studies of the Renew process for polyester recycle.
Petrecycle has developed a
range of innovative solutions for the processing and manufacture of
Polyester (PET). Each of the innovations is driven by applying simple
established solutions to complex problems, giving users a sustainable
competitive advantage. The patented
RENEW process is a unique filtration
solution that comprehensively eliminates all contamination (PVC, Colour
and Glue) from Post Consumer PET Scrap. This enables the RENEW process to
effectively substitute petrochemical raw materials (PTA/MEG) with PET
Bottle Scrap resulting in the total cost of production of PET to be
substantially lower than those produced with conventional technologies.
Process Summary
The Renew Process consists of the following key steps:
 |
Low temperature solid phase
Stage 1 glycolysis of PET flake to
enable embrittlement and removal of key contaminants in the post
consumer bottle waste |
| |
|
 |
Low temperature Stage 2 melt
phase glycolysis of PET flake to
enable complete depolymerisation of PET in presence of excess
glycol, yielding a free flowing low viscosity polymer solution in
glycol |
| |
|
 |
Addition of proprietary
additives to the low viscosity
polymer solution to enable adsorption of colour
Depth filtration of the solution to remove
additives, colour, PVC and all other inert contaminants from the
polymer solution |
The pilot plant is capable of demonstration of all of the
above 4 steps. The pictures below serve to depict the facilities available
at Brooklyn in Melbourne. All the above steps are covered by global
patents.
