Going Mobile

The PETrecycling.cz assessment based on R&D up-to-day results is, that it should be made clear, that all beverage containers, e.g. PET bottles, ALU cans and glass bottles, that are commercially imported into Czech Republic or sold here should be included in return systems with deposits - to encourage the consumers to take the bottles back

A new way to pay for groceries and handle deposit refunds is now being tested in the Netherlands.

Over the past few months 100 customers of the C1000 supermarket in the small Dutch town of Molenaarsgraaf have been involved in a pilot program in which they can use their mobile phone as a means of payment—simply by holding the phone next to the PIN code reader at the checkout. And, in addition to being able to use their mobile phones to pay for their shopping, this group of customers can also register on their phones the deposit refund amounts from containers that they return at the TOMRA RVM.

Again all they need to do is hold their phone next to the RVM and the machine sends a contactless receipt to the mobile phone. The refund can either be deducted at the checkout, credited to a Rabobank account, or donated to charity.

A total of seven deposit refund receipts can be stored on the phone before they have to be deducted at the checkout or donated to a charity account. The traditional barcode receipt is simulated on the mobile phone. The main benefit is that customers will not lose the ticket or forget to use it, as it is always stored on the phone.

The mobile phones being used in the pilot are equipped with NFC technology (Near Field Communication), which supports contact- free exchange of information – such as payments – at a short distance. The pilot, which is combined effort of LogicaCMG, Schuitema, NXP, TOMRA, KPN and Rabobank, will run for a total of six months.

According to Gerben Mak, innovation director at LogicaCMG in the Netherlands, “we are on the verge of a revolution in how we will use our mobile phones going forward in Europe. We’ve gained momentum due to a combination of increasingly mobile savvy consumers, emerging technological advancements such as NFC and a timeframe of crucial developments in banking infrastructure across Europe such as the single euro payments area. The ability to pay by mobile phone is not in itself revolutionary but what it paves the way for will be.”

The NFC (Near Field Communication) Project

A pilot program consisting of 100 people in the Netherlands to test out the attractiveness of using mobile phones for registering deposit refund transactions and paying for groceries. After halfway through, the pilot is showing the following results:

  • An average of 34 financial transactions per day

  • Average RVM transactions per day: 4.5

  • Has attracted significant interest from other companies

  • No technical difficulties whatsoever
