rePLANET: Putting a crunch on CO2

The PETrecycling.cz assessment based on R&D up-to-day results is, that it should be made clear, that all beverage containers, e.g. PET bottles, ALU cans and glass bottles, that are commercially imported into Czech Republic or sold here should be included in return systems with deposits as in Germany - to encourage the consumers to take the bottles back

A new compactor developed especially for TOMRA’s rePLANET recycling centers in California will save over 2 million pounds of CO2 emissions annually.

General view on rePLANET centre in California

By compacting collected containers into bales directly at the rePLANET centres, TOMRA has approximately quadrupled the amount that can be stored in the roll off trailers before they need to be exchanged.

The back part of the centre consists of two roll-off containers where the collected materials are stored for transport

TOMRA’s rePLANET recycling centres consist of two automated return stations and a staffed area in the middle for bulk returns (this is where the new Orwak compactor is located). The back part of the centre consists of two roll-off containers where the collected materials are stored for transport.

Due to significant increases in the quantity of PET containers being redeemed at rePLANET centres and the increasing costs of transporting this material to processing facilities, the need for a more efficient solution had become a critical issue for TOMRA’s operations in California.

So last year, Tomra North America and its sister company Orwak USA combined efforts to develop a compactor that could meet the specific requirements of the rePLANET business. “This is something we have wanted to implement for a long time, but the rising transportation costs have really made it imperative,” says rePLANET Technical Director Jim Velky.

“Implementing a compaction solution for rePLANET however was not just a simple matter of placing an order, because the type of solution we wanted didn’t exist on the market. What we needed was a unit that was able to compact bulk loads of aluminium cans or PET bottles (with their caps on), be small enough to fit into our rePLANET centers, and run off standard 120 volt power. It just wasn’t available. But after TOMRA acquired Orwak in 2006 we approached our sister company Orwak USA with the challenge to come up with a solution. Over the next few months we worked together to develop an initial design and started testing a prototype in November 2006,” explains Velky.

After some enhancements were made to the design, the solution was finalized in April and put into serial production this summer.  Installation of the compactors got underway in October and by year-end about 75 units are expected to be in operation.

This is a perfect example of a business approach that emphasizes implementing improvements which will not only deliver clear financial benefits, but also help to directly reduce environmental impact.

By installing this new unit, TOMRA will be able to eliminate hundreds of material transports annually, thereby cutting costs and eliminating over two million pounds of CO2 emissions annually.
