Romania: Aluminium can recycling is a success

The PETrecycling.cz assessment based on R&D up-to-day results is, that it should be made clear, that all beverage containers, e.g. PET bottles, ALU cans and glass bottles, that are commercially imported into Czech Republic or sold here should be included in return systems with deposits - to encourage the consumers to take the bottles back

On the occasion of the first seminar of ALUCRO, the newly established Aluminium Can Recycling initiative in Romania, the latest aluminium beverage can collection and recycling results were published: According to European Aluminium Association, it can be safely assumed that at least one out of three cans consumed in Romania are being collected and recycled.

Brussels - ALUCRO is a not for profit association founded by the European Aluminium Association (EAA), American Packaging (AMEP) and the Polish CAN-PACK GROUP, the main manufacturer of aluminium beverage cans for the Romanian market.

An increasing number of metal merchants and waste management companies are teaming up with this initiative. The collected cans are baled and transported for recycling to the main aluminium can sheet producers in Europe and members of the Packaging Group of the European Aluminium Association.

As is reported, ALUCRO started during the first half of 2009 with successful school campaigns in the holiday resort of Busteni in the Carpathian mountains and in District no. 4 of Bucharest and worked together with the teachers and the schoolchildren to collect the cans. The association also initiated and participated in various separate can collection and educational events organised by environmental NGO’s active in Bucharest and on the Black Sea coast.
