DG PETCORE Frank Koelewijn: "I am concerned with the haste with which legislators in candidate countries scramble to impose laws just to meet EU requirements. They risk making costly mistakes. Instead, they should request fast moving consumer goods manufacturers to come up with a sound business plan for the collection of recyclable household waste such, that it meets local economic, social and cultural needs. It is so much easier to do things right in the first place, instead of having to repair a dysfunctional collection system."

What is claimed as the most modern plastic sorting installation in Europe started operating in Roche, Switzerland in February.

The initial sorting is done by a UniSort P machine from the RTT robotics company of Zittau, Germany.

It is 1.8 metres wide and can handle four tonnes of post consumer plastic waste per hour. Any materials that do not appear to be PET (such as PVC, PP, PE, PS etc) are separated and the remaining PET is then passed to two UniSort CX colour separators which sort the PET into clear, light blue, green, brown, and mixed colours.

The sorted material is recycled in Frauenfeld. The plant at Roche is operated by Constantin AG, who have invested some 6 million Swiss Francs in the equipment.
