Czech Gateway to the PET bottles Recycling

Fine-Agg, a technology intended to convert mineral silt and fines to produce an aggregate for use in construction, will be developed with support from the WRAP-funded Recycling Commercialisation Centre.  The technology is based on the research of Dr. Chris Cheeseman and Richard Lupo from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London.

The Recycling Commercialisation Centre was established by WRAP to support and accelerate the growth and development of early stage technologies in the recycling sector.  It is operated by Imperial Innovations – one of the UK’s leading technology commercialisation and investment companies.

Commenting on the contract Steve Creed, Director of Business Growth at WRAP, said:

“WRAP is committed to encouraging growth in the recycling industry through product innovation and developing new markets for recycled materials.  A major part of our work is persuading people to think again about whether something is a waste or a resource.  Fine-Agg ticks all the boxes and we are delighted that the inventors are working with the Recycling Commercialisation Centre to bring this technology to market."

Successful application of the Fine-Agg technology promises to alleviate disposal of a waste material through the creation of a value-added product.  Soil and aggregate washing facilities which produce recycled aggregates typically produce unusable mineral silt and fines as a significant waste material.  Waste silt, which can reach up to 10% of the material processed, is commonly disposed of in landfill as it is not perceived as a useful product.

The Recycling Commercialisation Centre will assist in the development of the Fine-Agg technology and help to bring it to market by:

  • providing resources for technical testing and business planning;

  • building a management team;

  • providing access to funds and investor; and

  • developing and exploiting product markets

Looking to the future co-inventor Dr Cheeseman says of the contract:

“With guidance and support from the Recycling Commercialisation Centre at Imperial Innovations, I am confident that the Fine-Agg technology will have a successful commercial future”.

Editor's notes:

  1. WRAP works in partnership to encourage and enable businesses and consumers to be more efficient in their use of materials and recycle more things more often. This helps to minimise landfill, reduce carbon emissions and improve our environment.
  2. Established as a not-for-profit company in 2000, WRAP is backed by Government funding from Defra and the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
  3. Working in seven key areas (Construction, Retail, Manufacturing, Organics, Business Growth, Behavioural Change, and Local Authority Support), WRAP’s work focuses on market development and support to drive forward recycling and materials resource efficiency within these sectors, as well as wider communications and awareness activities including the multi-media national Recycle Now campaign for England.
